Chevette 4link setup and rx8 box
« on: Dec 27, 2017, 23:28:46 »
Hi. I'm thinking about putting a 4HA rear axel on my chevette. What would be better 4 link or watts linkage.
Iv seen some 4link kits on ebay might give a go.any links or info fitting them.

Allso been looking in to rx8 gearbox. Any mods needed to fit the chevette tunnel.?

Thank you.  :)

The rx8 box fits easily in the tunnel. Its longer than the OE box, so if you use the standard tunnel hole, the engine would be an inch or two further forward. If you are happy to chop and weld then the mounts and hole can be where you want them.

The mount needs a bit of careful fabrication as its a bit of an awkward shape. I have a 5 speed if you want any pics or measurements.

What engine is it going behind?

A watts linkage is slightly harder to engineer with the extra chassis mount (and more expensive with all the joints) but will keep the axle central regardless. Panhard rod fitting is straightforward and perfectly ok for road or rally use.

Its a heavy axle though - about 80kg without brakes or brackets compared to less than 60 of the Manta A with t/tube.

I have a 4HA fitted in my road rally car, 4 linked using Escort mk2 boxes with a panhard rod. Good thing about it is the availability of parts from the USA, loads of diffs and cwp ratios available for a dana 44 axle (which is basically the same as the 4HA). I have a Dana 44 Auburn LSD in mine, paid around 400 brand new including import taxes.

I've been looking to do the same as you using the Dana parts. What driveshafts have you used? From what I've found out you also need to use the Dana pinion bearings as well with the Dana CWP sets?

I used the original 4HA c.w.p, just used the Dana 44 Auburn l.s.d. All I had to do was drill the crown wheel mounting holes slightly larger on the l.s.d, as the mounting bolts are a slightly larger diameter on the 4HA.
From what I remember I used a 4HA pinion bearing, but used the Dana 44 diff bearings and backlash shims.
There are 2 types of Dana 44 diffs though, difference being the number of splines. So you need to make sure you get a 19 spline diff to match the 4HA shafts.
Another good thing with the Auburn l.s.d's are they have a 4 year exchange program, so you can send your diff back to them and get a new replacement for around $100.
