Yes it is screwed in.  The pipe has a taperred thread (can't remember size) to help it seal.

Thanks Ashley, I'll give it a bit more torque. It is not mentioned in my Haynes manual.

Be careful - I have known the pipe to break. It gets very corroded .

If it is well coroded or brakes off, then fear not,  I have had new ones manufactured in stainless steel.

 They are 22.00 + P+P

they rot so if it breaks off you can usually split - peel the thin bit left inside the head with a sharpish edged screwdriver and hammer and remove it with pliers.

i have the stainless ones that mark has made up. they are fit and forget basically.

one has been on two engines and is as good as new and i do a lot of miles

As the thread has moved on I thought I would mention that it came out without too much difficulty in the end & cleaned up OK, the same cannot be said for the water distribution tube though &  I just washed it out well & left it in place rather than damage it .
