Chevette master cylinder
« on: Jan 12, 2017, 18:44:16 »
Hello everybody and a happy new year to you all. I currently own a 1982 Chevette and it has a girling master cylinder on it that has unfortunately started leaking. I need a replacement but not fussed about it being new or used. Can anyone guide me in the right direction please. All the best. Sam

There are several on EBAY which claim to be Chevette compatible at about 40 or 60 with a reservoir.  I have bought a non reservoir one which looks OK  but not yet fitted it as my original is still OK. OR you might try Vauxhallgreenparts again on the net. Because of corrosion issues I am always a bit dubious of second hand hydraulic bits unless I have seen them working. - Scotty

Thanks for the info Scotty. I'm been in contact with one of those sellers from France but they only seem interested in you buying one and checking yourself to see if it would fit. I asked for a photo of the actual part but they weren't bothered. Are there any of you lads near York? I'm interested in having a meet up when I get this back on the road. Thanks again

Ps Scotty can you send me a pic of the one you bought please. I'd like to see if that would work on mine. Also I've spoke to 2 places about a used one but they are wanting more than what a new one would be.

Hi Sam,

Me and Ste ( @henry ) are in Middlesbrough.

Google pastparts.  They will be able to insert a stainless steel sleeve into your current master cylinder, and rebuild it.

Alternatively I'm pretty sure I have a used one sat in the cupboard doing, obviously being abused part I can't guarantee it's any good.  But it was working when removed.

Hi. Thanks for the info. Is your spare one a girling? I hear there are a few options. If it is would you sell it? Do you ever get over this way? I'm up for meeting with a few owners to see what they have done to their cars. Also is there anyway of telling the exact model of a Chevette. Mine is black and apparently the black ones were called the silhouette? But wonder if it actually is onlr had a colour change? Cheers. Sam

Me and Steve usually get to a few shows throughout the north east.  We normally get to the one at York Racecourse in September.

Yeah the spare m/c I have is a girling.  Delhi were only fitted on the very early cars, the rest all used Girling.  If it helps a fellow Chevette owner out then yes I'd sell it.  I managed to source a brand new one when I restored my Chevanne.

Standard chevettes where produced in many colours, including Black.  The silhouette was a special edition, basically had lots of optional extras as standard as well has having blue strobe graphics down each side.  Basically a way to try and shift cars!

Yeah I've had a look and it's said that they only did that model in 1982 and were black? Interested to find out if it is or not. If you think the master cylinder will be ok I'll buy it if I can. How much would you want for it? Also are you running the standard engine? I'm interested in doing a conversation but not sure which way to go with it. Cheers. Sam

Here are the pictures of the cylinder I bought. It would only need a little bend of I pipe to make it fit my car (77 Hatch) - Scotty

How does 20 sound?

I'm running a 1256, but it is quite heavily tuned  :zoom:

That sounds ace my friend, thanks. How do we proceed. I can see when I'm next free and try and get out your way or would you stick it in the post and I'll do PayPal?
Would like more info on what yours has had done to it as although I would like to get some form of large turbo charged engine in it I just don't think I'm ever gonna get it done! Sam
